about

The group Popular Music — a new duo of Zac Pennington (née Parenthetical Girls) & Prudence Rees-Lee (aka Prudence) — are pleased to present the latest installment of their sad sack singles club.

Written by Neil Young as the haunting closing threnody for Jonathan Demme’s 1993 drama Philadelphia, Popular Music reimagine “Philadelphia” as a song of longing, sung from beyond the grave. Recorded in the echoing expanse of the 19th century barn in Upstate NY that the duo call home, “Philadelphia” is composed primarily on an Optigan organ.

Proceeds from this single across all platforms will be donated to the BLACK TRANS PROTESTERS EMERGENCY FUND for the foreseeable future. Better still, we encourage you to save processing fees and simply donate to them directly.

The song is the latest single from the forthcoming full length Popular Music Plays In Darkness — a twelve-track reimagining of songs from 20th Century cinema that was conceived when the pair met in Los Angeles, and completed in a secluded corner of Upstate New York.
